Deal broadens reach of equipment dealer

A Harrisburg-area construction equipment dealership is extending its footprint southward through the acquisition of a company with offices in Maryland and Virginia.

Stephenson Equipment Inc. said last week it purchased Valley Supply & Equipment, a business founded in 1982 by Howard Klein and last owned by his two sons, Adam and Brandon.

Terms of the transaction were not disclosed.

Stephenson, which became an employee-owned company in 2023, sells and leases construction and public works equipment primarily in Pennsylvania and New York.

With the acquisition of Valley, its territory now extends into the Maryland, Virginia and Washington, D.C. markets.

“Adam and I have known the SEI team for many years, and we look forward to joining forces with them to better serve our customers in the market,” Brandon Klein said in a statement.

Valley was advised by SC&H Capital, a Maryland-based investment banking firm, and by attorneys from Lancaster-based law firm Barley Snyder.

The background: Based in Swatara Township, Stephenson now has 294 employees.

Founded in 1957, the company has additional locations in Butler, Ebensburg, Pittsburgh, Philadelphia and Wilkes-Barre in Pennsylvania, and Albany and Syracuse in New York.

Stephenson has made several other acquisitions over the years, most recently the 2021 purchase of MJR Equipment in Harrisburg.

Valley has offices in Baltimore and Hagerstown, Maryland, as well as Manassas Park, Virginia.
