Pamela Gunter-Smith, who led York College through the Covid-19 pandemic and deepened its connections to the York County community, plans to step down as president of the college in June 2023. She was named president, the college’s fourth, in 2013.
- During her nearly decade-long tenure, the college has undertaken numerous initiatives to forge stronger bonds with the city, including creation of the Center for Community Engagement and the Marketview Arts building, both in downtown York.
- Her focus on entrepreneurship, meanwhile, led to Knowledge Park @ YCP, an innovation campus opening near the college.
- She also oversaw creation of York College’s five-school structure and a growing emphasis on community- and project-based learning.
What’s next: The college’s board of trustees is beginning a search for a successor to Gunter-Smith.
- “Higher education has been in the midst of a changing environment throughout the country,” board chair Laura Wand said in a statement. “We are so thankful that Dr. Gunter-Smith has been at the helm to lead us through a series of important changes and challenges that have resulted in a ‘greater,’ more capable York College for our students, faculty and community.”
- York College has more than 3,500 undergraduate and more than 400 graduate students.
