WellSpan partnering to bring med school campus to York area

WellSpan Health has forged an agreement with Lewis Katz School of Medicine at Temple University to develop a York area campus for the medical school in time for the 2027-28 school year.

The campus would be the second outside of Philadelphia for the Katz School, which also has one in Bethlehem in partnership with St. Luke’s University Health Network

The York campus would open in a WellSpan administrative office building at 3350 Whiteford Road in Springettsbury Township.

The office, which is partially occupied, would likely undergo extensive renovations, according to WellSpan spokesperson Ryan Coyle.

The campus would start with a first class of about 40 students, who would graduate in 2031.

Founded in 1901, Katz currently enrolls about 880 students.

Why is this happening: The arrangement is expected to help York-based WellSpan with physician recruitment at a time when doctors are in increasingly short supply nationwide.

“Temple University has a strong national reputation for its educational programs, and we’re excited to work with such a prestigious institution knowing how it will benefit our patients,” Dr. Anthony Aquilina, WellSpan’s chief physician executive, said in a statement.

WellSpan recently announced an affiliation with New Jersey-based Jersey College to offer an associate degree program in nursing.
