Vehicle-parts manufacturer moving operations to York area

About 60 people who work for specialty manufacturer Mobile Climate Control in York County are about to get company.

  • The business is building a new U.S. headquarters and plant in West Manchester Township where it plans to consolidate operations currently divided between York, Indiana and New York state.
  • The project is expected to create 117 new jobs at the company, which makes vehicle heating and cooling systems primarily for buses.
  • The company expects to invest $3.18 million over the next three years into its new facility, a 220,000 square-foot plant at 400 South Salem Church Road.
  • The state is adding grants valued at $400,000, and has encouraged the company to apply for tax credits.

Why York: In describing its new facility, a company executive cited the region’s strong reputation for manufacturing. The state funding didn’t hurt, either.

  • “The funding will be used, with the help of the York County Economic Alliance and the Manufacturers’ Association, to develop our new employee base,” Stephen Preisler, vice president of U.S. operations for Mobile Climate Control, said in a statement.
  • The Manufacturers’ Association, a regional trade group based in York County, will support recruiting and training efforts by Mobile Climate Control. The economic alliance aided in site selection.
  • York-based Kinsley Properties was the developer for the company’s new location.

What’s next: The company expects to be operating in West Manchester by April.

  • As part of the consolidation, it will close its existing York County location, a parts distribution center at 3189 Farmtrail Road in Manchester Township, according to Lee King, a North America project manager for the company.
  • Hiring is already under way for the new York County positions at the company, he added.

The background: Mobile Climate Control is a global company, based in Toronto.

  • The company’s U.S. factory is currently in Goshen, Indiana, while it has an engineering and prototyping facility in Syracuse, New York.
  • Its parent is Sweden-based conglomerate VBG Group, which employs more than 1,500 people.
  • More than half, or about 875, work for Mobile Climate Control.
