J&J Pallet and Recycling LLC is planning to purchase, upgrade and move into a 16,400 square-foot industrial building at 1690 Opportunity Ave. in the Cumberland Valley Business Park in Greene Township.
The company, which sells recycled shipping pallets, is currently based in leased space at 1051 Sheffler Drive in Chambersburg.
The company has been approved for a $367,000 loan for the project from the Pennsylvania Industrial Development Authority, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development. The 10-year loan carries an interest rate of 5%.
The total project cost, which includes adding overhead dock doors and making other improvements, is $1.78 million.
“This is a perfect adaptive reuse of the building,” said Michael Ross, president of the Franklin County Area Development Corp., which facilitated the state loan.
J&J employs 10 people.
The background: Brazilian manufacturer Torcomp erected the building a decade ago with plans to make parts for a Volvo plant in Shippensburg, according to Ross.
But due to changes in the relationship between the two companies, Torcomp ended up keeping production in Brazil and using the Franklin County building for storage, he said.
Italian manufacturer Cattini, which supplies a truck plant in Hagerstown, Maryland, also used the building for storage, according to Ross. Cattini moved its operations to Maryland.
The building has been empty since the beginning of the year, Ross said.
